ed him all the way home.

Chapter Seven

Corin was daydreaming as they walked back into the keep, both of them stood stock still, stunned, when they met controlled chaos.

Kel pulled Officer Marcrent to one side. “What, by the moons, is going on?”

“Laird.” He dipped his head. “We have a couple of men in custody, one is a traitor, the other a spy.”

Marcrent looked angry, angrier than Kel had ever seen him. The man was normally incredibly level-headed.

“Where is everyone?” Kel’s eyes was immediately searching out his friends.

“I think they are in Bell’s suite, Laird. Laird Corin, I think you may be needed. Bell has collapsed.”

Corin and Kel shared a look, and Kel pulled Chance into his arms. “Go, I’ll follow you.”

Corin nodded and started to sprint. He burst into Bell’s suite, looking around wildly.

“Thank the stars.” Hunter breathed out a sigh of relief. “He’s in bed.”

Corin ran straight into Bell’s room, his eyes immediately cataloguing his friend, unconscious on the bed. Niko was sat beside him holding his hand, while the other was soothing his forehead with a cool cloth.

“What happened?” Corin was checking Bell’s vitals as he asked.

Niko looked distraught. “He collapsed. We discovered a spy and he needed to shift instantly and fight.”

“Shifting instantly takes a lot out of him, but it shouldn’t be enough to exhaust him like this.” Corin was already injecting him with shots of adrenaline and boosters— electrolytes, vitamins and minerals. It was designed to stabilize a system which had been taxed too greatly.

Niko tore his gaze away from Bell. “He’d spent the morning running with the refrinti and you know how he likes to try and keep up with them, even though they are faster.”

Corin grimaced at the thought of just how taxed Bell’s system must be. “Damn the man, it was a stupid move.”

“Needed to protect Niko,” a rough, quiet, raspy voice interrupted the conversation.

All eyes shot to Bell on the bed, his own eyes barely open.

“Tired, Doc.”

Corin squeezed Bell’s hand briefly. “I know. I’m doing what I can. You should start to feel better soon. Will shifting help?”

“It would, but we don’t have the strength. He’s exhausted, passed out cold. It was too much for him. It’s my Tarin side only that you’re talking to right now.”

“Do you need another boost? I’m not sure how fast you’ll burn through the first one. Yes, I know your metabolism is normally high, but does it make a difference if he’s not active?” Corin was pissed that he wasn’t one hundred percent sure— these were things he should know, especially where the health of his friend was concerned.

“S’okay, Doc, even I don’t know for sure. Never had this happen before. Was too much after my morning, s’all.” Bell was struggling to keep talking, his exhaustion still threatening to pull him back into the darkness.

Corin watched the vitals monitor that he’d hooked up. “Do you want another shot?”

“Yeah, better,” Bell was still slurring slightly.

Niko refused to let go of Bell’s hand, ignoring the looks from their friends gathered around the room.
